Chapter 22
It was easy for Moira to stay with Ruth for the rest of the day. It happened almost by accident, without her thinking about it. Gron came to hang around as the sun dipped low and they ate their fruit, Ruth and Moira commiserating over the nutrition bars Moira had in her back pack. Troii joined them and he and Gron seemed to get on well, considering how badly Gron got on with Kranu. Soon Moira was sitting with the whole clan, with only Kranu and the elusive Mruin missing. The older generation, Gron and Kranuâs parents, paid Moira very little attention, and eventually she relaxed, but she thought she caught her name being passed around a few times. It was hard tell though, it was so buried in deep growls.
Moira felt increasingly bad for Kranu. She was sure he hadnât gone far, and was instead sitting up in the trees somewhere, staying near her. She hoped he wasnât going hungry. She told herself he would be fine; all their food came from the trees anyway, he didnât have to come down to eat, but she still set a few big pieces aside for him. It seemed really unfair that he didnât appear to be welcome amidst his own family.
She wondered why. She wondered for the first time what he and Troii had been doing out in the jungle a weekâs travel away from Kranuâs family.
When the fading light broke the party up, Gron made motions to lead Ruth back to their platform, but she dug her heels in and said to Moira, âWill you be alright? You know, with them?â she asked. âYou can sleep in our tree if you donât want to be around Kranu tonight.â
Moira was touched by her genuine concern, but she really didnât want to be a third wheel for the happy couple. She had monopolised Ruth all day, and if she was reading him right, Gron was looking for some attention from her himself. He probably had her all to himself before Moira came along.
âItâs okay, itâs been fine so far. If I need you, I can just shout, right?â she said.
Ruth smiled, looking reassured and maybe a little relieved. Nothing bad could happen to Moira without Ruth hearing it - they didnât have any walls. âThatâs right,â she agreed, as Gron continued to gently tug and tease her in the direction of their platform.
They wished each other goodnight, and Moira watched Ruth walk away, talking happily to Gron as she took his hand and petted him. She looked happy, thought Moira, not for the first time. It still mystified her, and part of her still rebelled at the idea, but whether Ruth was crazy or not â and Moira was starting to think not â she loved Gron.
She became aware that she and Troii were the only two left in the small clearing. She turned to look at him, and he looked back at her, his face impassive but his tail twitching nervously.
